This is the gateway to the Germanic world on the North Sea. Since the beginning of the 14th century, the Flemish have protected their identity in the face of attempts at forced linguistic assimilation. In the Middle Ages, the territory was divided between many feudal states, the most important being the county of Flanders, the duchy of Brabant and the county of Loon.
