Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, the country lies on the borders of three European states – France, Italy and Switzerland. Various Celtic tribes settled on Arpitan land, the most famous being the Allobroges. They found themselves rapidly integrated into the kingdom of Burgundy, comprising Burgundy and Sapaudie (Savoy).
