\nThe term \u201cminority\u201d refers to many concepts often related and difficult \nto comprehend. If it is so that this term precludes those of the \nmajority, its definition often becomes delicate when associated with \nhumanity. The complexity of human relations and the multiplicity of \nsituations makes researching a universally accepted definition \ndifficult. \n\n<\/p>

Even in international law, no definition of \u201cminority\u201d exists. There are different definitions depending on whether they are texts of the United Nations or the Council of Europe. The UN more readily uses the terms \u201cethnic, religious or linguistics minorities\u201d, while the European texts uses the term \u201cnational minorities\u201d. It should be noted that despite the absence of a legally binding definition of the term \u201cminority\u201d, many agree that a minority must meet objective characteristics (such as language, traditions and cultural patriotism) and a subjective factor, namely the will of its members to assert themselves as such, and assert their commitment to that which makes their identity specific. In developing European texts to defend the rights of minorities, one of the failings was requiring minorities to define the word itself, to find the minimum criteria that enable a group of individuals to be classified as a national minority.<\/p>

National minority<\/h2>
\"\"<\/figure>

A \u201cnational minority\u201d commonly\nrefers to a population living in a minority situation within a state. There are\ntwo types: the people of eponymous states like the Danish in Germany or the\nHungarians in Romania. By extension, it also applies to non-sovereign people\nwho do not have their own state structures. The latter are \u201cstateless nations\u201d.\nBrittany, the Basque Country and Friesland are examples of this.<\/p>

Ethnic minority<\/h2>
\"\"<\/figure>

By ethnic minorities one means both\nnational minorities as well as allogenic minorities, that is groups of\nnon-indigenous people and foreign communities. The Maghrebis in France or the\nTurks in Germany are even considered ethnic minorities. Canadian legislation\ndefines them as \u201cvisible minorities\u201d. The term \u201cethnicity\u201d, derived from the ancient\nGreek \u03b5\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/em>, meaning \u201cpeople\u201d or \u201cnation\u201d.<\/p>

Linguistic minority<\/h2>
\"\"<\/figure>

National and\nethnic minorities are often linguistic minorities. The Welsh or the Catalans are linguistic minorities in\nthe state on which they depend, but they can hardly be described as such, their\nrespective languages being spoken by the majority in the whole or in part of\ntheir territory. In rare cases, certain groups are able to speak a maternal\nlanguage other than the state majority without being qualified as national or\nethnic minorities. This is the case for the French population of Switzerland.<\/p>

Religious and sexual minorities<\/h2>

Religious or sexual minorities, even if they fall\noutside the scope of this work, are often cited when discussing the question of\nminorities. Among the most famous minorities are the Irish Catholics, the Jews\nof Morocco and the Muslims of Belgium. Gender minorities correspond to\nsociological groups in terms of sexual orientation. Homosexuals and lesbians\nare the most characteristic example.<\/p>
