It is the biggest of the six Celtic countries. The largest part of the island forms an independent republic, while the north-east remains under the control of the United Kingdom. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eurominority.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flag_ireland.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-302\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eurominority.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flag_ireland.png 600w, https:\/\/www.eurominority.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flag_ireland-300x154.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption> The Irish flag is a vertical tricolour: three equal bands of green,  white and orange. The principle  of the flag dates from 1848, but was not recognised as the national flag  until the Easter Rising in 1916. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>Ireland has been a Celtic country for a long time. The\nGaels succeeded the megalithic civilisations who were closely related to those\nliving in Brittany (the site of Newgrange was connected to that of Barnenez in\nBrittany). Never experiencing Roman colonisation, these Gaels were able to\nintegrate different successive waves of Britons, Vikings, Anglo-Normans etc.\nwho adopted the Gaelic language and Celtic civilisation. The English\noccupation, which started in the 12th century and peaked in the 18th, relegated\nthe natives to second class citizens and favoured the plantation of British\ncolonies, a policy exacerbated by the issue of religion. The Irish remained\nattached to Catholicism, while the new residents, who held political and\neconomical power, were Protestants.<\/p><p>Paradoxically,\nthe beginnings of the Irish political movement for the liberation of the island\nwere the work of a Protestant lawyer, Wolfe Tone, who preconceived the union of\nCatholics and Protestants. These days, English is the dominant language on the\nisland, but the Celtic culture remains a mainstay of the national conscience\nand is kept alive and regularly reinvented.<\/p><p>Today, the\nnorth is still governed by the United Kingdom. The conflict intensified from\nthe 1960s onwards, the Irish Republican Army and the Unionist paramilitary\ngroups largely defining this period. Twenty-six of the 32 counties formed a \u201cFree State\u201d becoming\na republic in 1949. Six of the nine counties of Ulster, dominated by the\nUnionists, remained loyal to London, these Unionists refused all sharing of\npower with the strong nationalist minority (43%), resulting in a movement for\nthe equality of civil rights and a guerrilla war led by the Irish Republican\nArmy (IRA). In 1998, negotiations lead to the \u201cGood Friday\u201d peace agreement.\nSinn F\u00e9in became the principal nationalist party and the IRA eventually\ndisarmed in 2005. It is the first\nofficial language of the Republic of Ireland (since 1921) and became an\nofficial language of the European Union in 2007. Its usage has declined a great\ndeal in its traditional strongholds in the west (<em>Gaeltachta\u00ed<\/em>), but\nprogressed in the towns, education and in the diverse aspects of modern life.\nSpoken by more than 1.2 million people, Irish is a daily language of 70,000\npeople. Thanks to efforts put in place by the Irish government and the Official\nLanguages Act 2003, Irish and English have been placed on equal footing. For\nexample, the television channel TG4 (formerly <em>Teilif\u00eds na Gaeilge<\/em>)\nbroadcasts programmes in Irish. Despite these efforts, the Irish have a\nparadoxical attitude to their language and generally prefer to use English, the\ninternational language. Although the Republic of Ireland is\nrun on a Western democratic model (even if it struggles to return the Irish\nlanguage back to the place it deserves), the north is still only at the start\nof a process that could lead to a government representing all segments of the\npopulation. The rediscovery of the north by the south has encouraged a more\npositive and evolutionary solution to the problem, based on peace and social\nprogress.
