This land, called \u201cS\u00e1pmi\u201d, stretches from the north of Sweden, Norway, Finland and on the Kola peninsula in Russia. Their language, Sami, is spoken in many groups. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eurominority.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flag_sami.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-315\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eurominority.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flag_sami.png 600w, https:\/\/www.eurominority.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flag_sami-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption> The S\u00e1mi flag is red, blue, green and yellow. The circle  represents the sun (red) and the moon (blue).  <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>For thousands of years, the S\u00e1mi lived on hunting and\nfishing to the north of the European continent. It wasn\u2019t until around the year\n900&nbsp;AD that they began to herd tamed reindeer, henceforth considered their\ntraditional way of life. They maintain a special relationship with nature,\nliving in harmony with it. Thus, the S\u00e1mi community was traditionally based on\nthe <em>siida<\/em>, i.e. the units and collectivities of common law (not\nnecessarily familial), which use their own council and administration,\nallocating hunting grounds and fishing.<\/p><p>The\ncolonisation of S\u00e1pmi (Lapland) and the exploitation of resources were\nconsiderably increased over the course of the 13th and 14th centuries, causing\nmany states to claim their sovereignty over this region. The first stage of\nthis division split the territory the length of the mountain ridges from the\nregion of J\u00e4mtland to Finnmark The border between Sweden and Finland was\nestablished in 1809 and that between Norway and Russia in 1826.<\/p><p>Over the\ncourse of the past two centuries, the S\u00e1mi have been the victims of repression\nand negligence of the people who ruled them, who considered them to be\ninferior. For example, the well-known term \u201cLapon\u201d is used in a derogatory\nmanner by the population (\u201clapp\u201d being an old Scandinavian term used to\ndescribe a worn piece of clothing or \u201clape\u201d in vernacular Finnish). The banning\nof cultural expression and the speaking of the Sami language intensified in the\n19th century. It is only since the 1980s that the S\u00e1mi have made a remarkable\nreturn to the public scene, allowing them to develop their autonomy peacefully\nand to enforce their identity.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"261\" height=\"71\" The representatives of the S\u00e1mi\nparliaments in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia participated. It was during\nthis historic event that they assert that the S\u00e1mi are a united people, whose\nunity cannot be challenged by state borders. The declaration states, among\nother things, the right to self-determination by the S\u00e1mi people and the fact\nthat important work is to be carried out to complete the \u201cNordic S\u00e1mi\ncontract\u201d. It\ncorresponds to the north of Scandinavia, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in\nRussia. Essentially made up of arctic landscapes, the boreal forests (taiga)\nand the arid plains (tundra) follow one another. The forests of taiga are\nprincipally made up of conifers, dominated by larch, spruce, fir and pine. The\ntundra is a landscape of lichens and cropped vegetation, a source of food for\nthe reindeer. The coast, where the big towns are located, benefits from a more\ntemperate climate. To the north, the coast is not covered with ice-sheets\nbecause of the effect of the warm current of the Gulf Stream from the south of\nthe Atlantic. Islands and fjords dominate the coastal landscape. The Gulf of\nBothnia is covered with ice all winter. Three groups\nare dominant (to the south, Ume and southern Sami; Pite, Lule and Sami to the\nnorth; to the east, Enare, Skolt, Akkala, Kildin, Ter, Kemi and Kainuu).\nSignificant differences exist between these three linguistic groups.\nInter-comprehension is difficult, if not sometimes impossible. The variants of\nAkkala, Kemi et Kainuu are extinct and those of Ume, Pite and Ter are in\nserious danger of extinction. Northern Sami is the most common variety and is\noften used for radio programmes as well as in numerous publications. Even if\nrelations were already possible between S\u00e1mi repatriated among Sweden, Norway\nand Finland, it is only a couple of decades since contact was established with\nS\u00e1mi in Russia, after years of long isolation. The S\u00e1mi are legally protected\nand benefit from an area of administration, which is dedicated to them.\nHowever, in Sweden the farmers and the forestry companies call into question\nthe right to reindeer grazing.
