Linguistically, the Walloons, as well as the Picards and the Normans, make up part of the O\u00efl people. The colours are those of the principality of Li\u00e8ge,  which was an independent state from the 10th to the end of the 18th  century and whose eponymous diocese coincided with the linguistic area  of Wallonia.  <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>Populated\ninitially by the Celtic tribe of the <em>Belgii<\/em>, Wallonia was conquered by\nCaesar and was strongly Romanised. After the collapse of the Roman Empire,\nWallonia saw the emergence of the kingdom of the Franks, as well as the\nCarolingian dynasty, of Li\u00e9geoise origin, mixing its history with that of\nnorthern France. Following the Treaty of Verdun, it returned to Lorraine and\nthen integrated into the Germanic Holy Roman Empire. After a feudal period\ndividing it into independent micro-territories that were regularly in conflict,\nvast counties and duchies were created (Namur, Brabant, Luxembourg, Hainaut),\ncontrolled by the Burgundian power, Spain, and then Austria.<\/p><p>The\nprincipality of Li\u00e8ge became involved in the French Revolution and France\nprofited from annexing the region and dividing it into departments, based on\nprovinces. Integrated with the Netherlands in 1815, Wallonia rebelled in 1830,\nleading to the creation of Belgium, born of an arranged marriage requiring the\nco-existence of two very different people: the Walloons and the Flemish.<\/p><p>The Industrial\nRevolution made Wallonia rich in natural resources, until its decline in the\n1960s. Belgium turned towards federalism. The Walloons wanted economic autonomy\nso that they would no longer depend on the Flemish majority. In a referendum, the\nBelgians were asked if they wanted the return of King Leopold III, whose\nbehaviour during the war had been questioned. The Walloons voted \u201cNo\u201d while the\nFlemish voted \u201cYes\u201d. Because of their demographic weight the latter allowed the\nking to return. This return was accompanied by serious riots in Wallonia, which\nresulted in three deaths at Gr\u00e2ce-Berleur when the police fired at the crowd. A\n\u201cWalloon government\u201d assembled in Li\u00e8ge and wished to declare independence.\nL\u00e9opold III eventually abdicated but the tensions between the Walloons and the\nFlemish were never resolved. It is made up of\ntwo large geographical areas separated by the Sambre-et-Meuse furrow, the two\nmain rivers of the region: to the north-west the plateaus of Hainaut, Brabant\nand Hesbaye, to the south-east the high plateaus of Condroz, the Famenne, the\nArdenne and Gaume. An economically developed region with an indigenous\npopulation, the \u201cWalloon ridge\u201d crosses the country of Tournais, through Mons,\nCharlerois, Namur, Huy, Li\u00e8ge as far as Verviers. Populated initially by the Celtic tribe of the Belgii, Wallonia was conquered by Caesar and was strongly Romanised.
